One final comment: I think leveraging technology for sustainable development is both a great opportunity to do good business as well as a responsibility to contribute.

Summary of Discussion

Q6. Amid growing disruptions – from extreme weather to security and unstable institutions – how do we ensure that technology innovation and technology infrastructure is more resilient and secure?

  • Collaboration is tantamount - not just governments and companies, but also NGOs, local telecoms, community organizations
  • Skills development and vocational training to ensure people in the right places are armed with the right skill sets
  • Resilient technology as one that evolves and enables people's capacities
  • Solutions for disaster mangaement that include local stakeholders of all types
  • Build capacity of technology to respond at scale to keep communiteis resilient
  • Importance of Agility and flexibility, adaptability
  • Telecom infrastructure as an example to learn from, where innovations are implemented quickly to respond to market demands

Q5. How do we scale up technology innovation and the deployment of technology solutions in those countries that need it the most to boost economic development?

  • Scalability requires talent, capital, and political security
  • Technology transfer at right points, from end to end
  • Link with SDG 11 (Smart Cities)
  • large companies can focus on capacity building, in particular with women and local entreneurs who can identify needs on the ground
  • Anchor innovations in development frameworks that relate to local governmental policies - this helps gain political will to make progress
  • Affordability as one of the most crucial barriers to sustainable infrastructure improvements
  • Take a practical approach to identify 'spaces' that must be created, and 'barriers' that are direct challenges to scaling solutions
  • Government bureaucracy as a hurdle to public private partnerships - emphasizing the importance of political will

Q4. How do we ensure that technology innovation is inclusive and does not [further] leave people behind?

  • Education (in conjunction with SDG 4) - in particular equal access to education
  • Examples: Mpesa in Kenya, fintech in India, digital buses to expand access to technology and information
  • Strong local partners needed
  • Among more remote communities, grow awareness of opportunity technology affords, and create drive for access

Q3. How do we ensure that we see purposeful technology innovation for sustainable development?

  • Innovate with human needs in mind
  • Grameworks to guide innovation (Principles for Digital Development)
  • Identify the problem through collaboration and consultation, then design solutions that address the human challenges
  • support local entrepreneurs who understand challenges on the ground
  • Innovate with desired impact in mind
  • User-centered design
  • Companies can define internal best practices to guide innovation, guided by external experts

Q2. How do we ensure that technology innovation is effectively utilized to drive sustainable development. What are the characteristics of “effective” technology innovation for sustainable development challenges?

  • Scalability is crucial
  • Need to address challenges in context of field needs and logistics "on the ground"
  • Making solutions adoptable by everyone - ensure that marginalized and poor communities are part of solutions
  • Collaboration is crucial, especially across social strata AND among funders
  • Manage differing perceptions of digital divide
  • Ensure innovation addresses problems, does not create new ones (example: automation and jobs)

Q1. How well has the technology industry delivered, so far, on the promise of driving solutions to key sustainable development challenges?

  • spur innovation that directly solves customers problems over straight product changes
  • Requires governments to invest and create an environment conducive to solutions from the tech sector
  • link technology to impact to identify real solutions where they are most needed
  • Frameworks to guide innovation for responsible development (Digital India, Corporate Digital Responsiblity)
