FAQs
1. Project overview
What is the aim of the EU Horizon GreenGrocer project?
The GreenGrocer project aims to improve the quality, availability and accessibility of food footprint data, to enable and ensure its use across the food industry. This project brings together experts in LCA, data architecture, footprint standards, and policy to achieve three main goals:
- Address gaps in food footprint knowledge
- Strengthen open-source food data platforms
- Co-create knowledge with science and industry
GreenGrocer supports EU policies such as the Farm to Fork Strategy, EU Deforestation Regulation, Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD), and European Sustainability Reporting Standards (ESRS), and informs eco-label development and sustainability food labelling rules. More information on the project can be found on the project website (https://greengrocer-project.eu/).
Who is funding this project?
GreenGrocer is a four-year research and innovation project with a total cost of €9,897,438.25 and is being jointly funded by the European Commission who are contributing €6,999,521.25 under the Horizon Europe programme, and the Swiss Confederation. It falls under the call on “Environmental impacts of food systems” in Cluster 6: Food, Bioeconomy, Natural Resources, Agriculture and Environment. The project number is 101182025.
Who is leading this project?
The GreenGrocer project is managed by a consortium consisting of 22 partners from 9 European countries. NILU, an independent non-profit research foundation with expertise in EU-funded projects and open science principles, coordinates this project.
The consortium includes the organisations and people behind key food footprint models, including the trase.earth platform, CoolFarm, EXIOBASE, and HESTIA. It also includes organisations contributing to European policy, standardisation efforts, and organisations collaborating with a wide network of food system actors, open science experts, AI specialists, and strategy consultants working with large food producers in Europe.
A detailed list of the members of this consortium can be found on the project website here: https://greengrocer-project.eu/project/consortium
2. Participation in the Advisory Group
What is the advisory group, and what is its purpose?
The GreenGrocer project aims to improve the quality, availability, and accessibility of food footprint data, enabling its effective use across the food industry.
The main purpose of the Advisory Group is to act as an information two-way channel between the consortium and the wider community. Insights from this group will be crucial to the success of this four‑year project. You will be:
- Informed and updated on the latest developments
- Asked to provide input on pain points and knowledge gaps you observe to steer our work
- Asked to communicate and disseminate these innovations within your networks
What will I receive in return for participating in the Advisory Group?
As a member of this Advisory Group, you will be part of a unique network of subject matter experts spanning academia, industry, think tanks, farmer unions and others. Through this project, members will provide expert input that informs the development of food footprint standards and methodologies and will engage with emerging data tools used to support evidence‑based decision‑making in the European food system.
As an advisory group member, you will:
- Get first-look updates on new science and tools developed in the project
- Access cutting-edge data, tools, and discussions in your field
- Help shape food system footprint standards and methodologies
- Help shape information systems defining EU legislative standards for food and diets
- Collaborate with experts from academia and industry
Who is eligible to join the advisory group?
The advisory group is a curated, invite-only group selected to help provide input, feedback, and critical dissemination of the work in this project. If we have reached out to you, it is because we see your expertise as valuable to advancing the aims of this project. If you know someone better suited for this advisory group, or that you believe should also be considered to join, please contact GlobeScan’s Advisory Group coordinator (curran.cunningham@globescan.com) so we can consider your suggestion.
Why was I invited to join the advisory group?
The Advisory Group has been set up to bring together individuals with a wide range of knowledge, expertise, experience and views. You were identified as someone with specialised expertise that aligns closely with the project goals which will be key in shaping the discussion and advance the project’s objectives. Areas of expertise may be in one of the following:
- LCA (Life Cycle Analysis) and food foot printing analysis
- Sustainable financing
- Footprint standards and policy
- Food production
- Farming landscape
What are the responsibilities of advisory group members?
As members of this invite-only advisory group, you will play an active role in shaping the outcomes of the GreenGrocer project, which runs from September 2025 to August 2029. Participation includes:
- Attending the annual Advisory Group meeting (online)
- Providing feedback on material and outputs one to two times a year
- Sharing specialist knowledge on key deliverables when requested
We will ask for your input via surveys and facilitated discussions.
The time required will depend on your area of expertise and the project’s needs at different stages. We don’t anticipate more than an hour for each instance of support, such as an interview, reviewing material, or a working session, and we’ll provide plenty of notice beforehand. When we launch the Advisory Group in April, we will provide project timings and when we will need input.
3. Communication
How will the advisory group communicate and receive updates?
To ensure your expertise shapes the GreenGrocer project, we will primarily communicate with you via email. In addition, Advisory Group members will have exclusive access to an Advisory Group Forum website. This platform provides project information, regular updates through ‘Latest News,’ member profiles, discussion forums for ongoing input, and key dates such as upcoming meetings. Your engagement here is central to guiding the project’s success.
What are my data privileges?
Project deliverables relating to the Advisory Group, including surveys and interviews, will be presented only as aggregated insights and findings to avoid identification of individuals, in compliance with GDPR requirements. These will be publicly available.
Individual communication and feedback between Advisory Group and project members will be treated as confidential and shared only within the project consortium, and only with the consent of the individuals concerned. These will not be made public.
For each item shared, we will clearly state whether it is for internal Advisory Group use only or approved for external sharing and wider circulation.
